The Man

My graduation project, a short film titled The Man, explores the sense of insecurity that many women experience in public spaces. The film focuses on the fear that can arise simply from the presence of men and the potential threat they may represent, even when nothing actually happens. It is therefore not about a specific incident, but about the constant sense of vigilance and tension that many women carry with them.

This fear does not emerge out of nowhere. Stories of sexual assault, rape, and violence against women play a significant role in shaping it. Social media, news reports, and the personal experiences that women share with one another about harassment and violence further reinforce these feelings. At a time when issues such as femicide are being discussed more openly and more frequently, it is understandable that many women feel on edge when walking alone.

Yet it should not be considered normal for women to have to remain constantly on guard in public spaces. Through my short film, I aim to raise awareness of this issue. Change begins with understanding and with acknowledging the reality that many women face every day.

With this film, I especially hope to reach Dutch men and boys. I want to give them an insight into what this experience can feel like for a woman, so that they can better understand the seriousness of the issue. I also hope the film encourages them to reflect on their own behaviour and inspires them to speak up when they witness behaviour that contributes to this sense of insecurity.
