Scholarships for non-EU/EEA students who want to study at ArtEZ

Are you an international student from outside the European Economic Area (EEA)? Would you like to study for a bachelor’s or master’s degree at ArtEZ? Read on to find out if you are eligible for the ArtEZ Scholarship or the NL Scholarship.

ArtEZ Scholarship

For the academic year 2026-2027, ArtEZ has the honour of offering non-European students who are among the brightest and most excellent in their field an ArtEZ scholarship. Still, it is not only brightness and excellence that matters: ArtEZ is also committed to strengthen the international diversity of its student population. This is bolstered by the ArtEZ scholarships.

While the scholarships surely demand certain records of academic rigour and artistic excellence as a base upon which the student can be reviewed, they also aim to enable diverse kinds of students to cross the often intimidating threshold of art universities. ArtEZ scholarships are monitored and offered as a way of encouraging new voices, vocabularies, grammars, expressions and ambitions for our learning and research programmes and are committed to helping potential students building a critical community of care and responsibility within ArtEZ.

The amount of the ArtEZ Scholarship is 50% of the institutional tuition fee.

Students will receive the ArtEZ Scholarship for the nominal duration of their studies, and the amount will adjust each year with the institutional tuition fee.

The scholarship is paid (or subtracted from the tuition fee), at the beginning of each study year, if and when, the student advances to the next study year. In case of deregistration, the ArtEZ Scholarship will be reimbursed in proportion.

Please note: every year we receive a lot of applications for this scholarship, but we have only a few scholarships to award.

Scholarships for current ArtEZ students

As an ArtEZ student, you can apply for an Erasmus+ grant or the NL Scholarship to go abroad for an exchange, internship or research project.

Are you in your final year or about to graduate? Then you can apply for a VSBfonds grant for further study abroad.

Erasmus+ grant

You can apply for the Erasmus+ grant if you:

  • are a student at ArtEZ
  • and want to go on an exchange or take an internship in the EU
  • or want to take an internship in the EU after graduating.

The Erasmus+ grant is part of the Erasmus+ programme. It gives you the chance to gain new knowledge and skills. The grant covers the period you spend abroad on an exchange or internship.

At ArtEZ, you can only apply for an Erasmus+ grant for exchanges within the EU. You can also use this grant if you go to: Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Turkey or North Macedonia.

Note: You cannot use the Erasmus+ grant at ArtEZ if you go to Switzerland or the UK.

Conditions:

To qualify for an Erasmus+ exchange grant, you must:

- be enrolled as a full-time student at ArtEZ during your exchange

- choose an institution that is a partner institute of ArtEZ

- study abroad for a period of 3–12 months (up to a maximum of 360 days per study cycle – bachelor's or master’s)

- live and study in the host country for the entire period.

- have approval from the exam board so your exchange counts towards your ArtEZ programme with ECTS credits

- apply for the Erasmus+ study grant at least six weeks before departure

- not receive other EU funds to cover additional costs of studying abroad

- not be an international EU student applying for an exchange in your home country

At ArtEZ, you can only apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant only for internships in the EU.  You can also use this grant if you go to: Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Turkey or North Macedonia.

Note: You cannot use the Erasmus+ grant at ArtEZ if you go to Switzerland or the UK.

Note: You cannot use the Erasmus+ grant at ArtEZ if you go to Switzerland or the UK.

* Graduation means the moment you pass your final exams.

Conditions:

To qualify for a post-graduation internship, these are the conditions you must meet:

- You have arranged the traineeship during your final year of study.
- You have completed the application for the Erasmus+ grant before you graduate (allow at least one month for this). Make sure all forms have been signed before your graduation. Your internship plans must be approved by ArtEZ (i.e. your head of course, internship coordinator)
- Your traineeship is within the EU.
- You will be able to receive a grant for 2 months at most for an internship after graduation. Please note that you can receive a maximum of 12 months Erasmus+ grant per study cycle (BA, MA). You may not receive any other EU funds to cover additional costs of studying or internship abroad.

- The end date of the internship must fall within one year of graduation. The aim of these internships is to make your transition to the labour market easier. You are not obliged to return to the Netherlands afterwards but can instead choose to remain in the host country if that is financially feasible.

If you are an international EU student at ArtEZ, you will not receive an Erasmus grant for an internship in your ‘home’ country.

If you would like to do an exchange, read more about how to prepare and apply on the Exchange page. Note: application deadlines apply.

Other exchange possibilities within Erasmus+:

In addition to regular physical exchange, Erasmus+ also offers opportunities for short-term blended exchanges between partner institutions. These combine a physical and a virtual component.

Erasmus+ Inclusion and Travel Support Top-up

If you receive an Erasmus+ grant, you may also be eligible for additional support through one of the top-ups.

The Erasmus+ Inclusion Top-up

This top-up is for students who face barriers to study. For example, if you have limited financial resources, a disability or health problems, you may qualify for extra support.

The Erasmus+ Travel Support Top-up

This top-up is for students who choose sustainable transport to travel to their host country.

What are the conditions?

The Erasmus+ Inclusion top-up is only valid within the EU. Are you are taking part in the Erasmus+ programme and do you need extra financial support due to exceptional personal circumstances? Then you may be eligible for the Inclusion Top-up if you fall into one of the following categories:

- Disabilities

- Health problems

- Financial difficulties

The examples below provide an idea of disabilities, health problems and financial difficulties. We will always ask you to provide justification.

- Physical disabilities, such as mobility problems

- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia

- Mental challenges, such as living with epilepsy

- Sensory impairiments, such as visual impairments or hearing impairments

- Chronic diseases, such as rheumatism or diabetes

- Neurodiversity, such as autism or ADHD

- Receiving a supplementary grant from DUO.

What is the amount of the grant?

If your application is approved, you will receive €250 per month in addition to your regular Erasmus+ grant.

How to apply for the grant

The Erasmus+ Inclusion top-up must be requested and approved by your student counselor. If you want to be considered for the Inclusion top-up, go to Osiris Student/Stay Abroad and follow the steps in the step-by-step plan.

What are the conditions for green travel?

If you go on an exchange abroad, you will incur travel costs. You are therefore entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses in addition to the Erasmus+ grant. The amount of this reimbursement depends on the distance travelled: the more kilometres you travel, the higher the amount. You can also receive an additional allowance for travel days before and after your stay abroad (maximum two days – one before and one after the exchange).

In addition to the fixed reimbursement, you may be eligible for supplementary Travel Support if you use a sustainable form of transport for both your outward and return journeys. Examples include travelling by train, bus, boat or bicycle. Because these modes of transport often take longer and can cost more, the grant amounts are higher.

Between 10 and 99 km

Regular (non-sustainable travel): €28

That's why VSBfonds offers a large number of scholarships to students who want to study or do research abroad. For this scholarship, your motivation and care for your community are more important than your grades.

You can apply for this grant if you:

  • are a Dutch national or have a demonstrable connection with the Netherlands;
  • will graduate soon or have just graduated;
  • wish to do a follow-up programme or research inside or outside the EU.

A new round of applications for the VSBfonds grant starts every autumn.

Some of the conditions are:

- Your Dutch graduation date is between 1 March 2024 and 30 December 2026.

VSBfonds believes it is important that students who have a disability can also study abroad. They may be able to apply for a higher grant. For this, you should contact Barbara Heutink, your ArtEZ contact person.

You can apply up to 1 March 2026 inclusive. There is one round of applications per year.

If you meet the conditions, you can apply directly via the VSBfonds website.

ArtEZ handles the initial selection round, which takes place from March to early April. The process has a written and an oral phase:

  • If you pass the written phase, you will be invited for an interview with the ArtEZ selection committee.
  • In the selection we pay particular attention to your engagement with your community and your motivation.
  • It is also important to provide a realistic budget. You can find examples of costs in different countries on the VSBfonds website.

If you are selected for the VSBfonds grant and do not have proof of admission, you can be awarded the grant on a conditional basis. If you are ultimately not admitted, your grant will lapse.

All information about the grant can be found on the VSBfonds website.

At ArtEZ, Barbara Heutink and Hedwig Jansen are your contacts for the VSBfonds grant.
