Language requirement

Language requirement for English-taught master’s programmes

To enrol in an English-taught master’s programme at ArtEZ, you must meet our language requirement. There are several ways to show you meet this requirement.

Certificates

You meet our language requirement if you’ve been awarded one of these certificates:

  • IELTS Academic: at least 6.0 for the overall band score. We only accept results from tests taken at an IELTS test centre.
  • TOEFL iBT: at least a total score of 80 or higher. We do not accept the Home Edition.
  • TOEIC: at least 335 for speaking and writing, and at least 865 for listening and reading.
  • Cambridge First (FCE) or higher: an overall score of at least 169.
  • LanguageCert Academic: an overall score of at least 65. We only accept results from tests taken at an LanguageCert test centre.
  • Pearson PTE Academic: an overall score of at least 61.

Please note: There are additional requirements for the Master's programme Creative Writing in regards to the subscores. Contact the Student Affairs department for more information.

Student Affairs will ask you to upload or email your certificate. Other certificates are not accepted.

If you already have a certificate, make sure your certificate is still valid at the start of your programme. Most certificates are valid for two years. Cambridge certificates are sometimes valid for longer.

When do you automatically meet the language requirement?

You can also meet the language requirement if:

  • English is your mother tongue and English is the national language of the country where you completed your secondary education, or
  • you have obtained a diploma for education that is equivalent to at least general secondary education level (havo) or pre-university education level (vwo) and English was the language of instruction, or
  • you have passed the final exam in English at senior general secondary education or pre-university education level (English at MBO-4 level is not sufficient*) in the Netherlands or the Dutch Caribbean, or
  • you have passed the propaedeutic year of a degree taught in English in the Netherlands, or
  • you have obtained a diploma of a bachelor programme taught in English or an associate degree (ad) taught in English, or
  • your programme is on the Diploma List  (part of the Code of Conduct) and English was part of the curriculum.

Student Affairs will ask you to upload a diploma from your previous education institution.

*If you’re following an MBO 4 programme and taking English at a higher level (HAVO), you may still meet the language requirement. Use this form to check whether you’re taking a test at the right level. Have the form completed and send it to us.

Take your language test as soon as possible

If you need to take a language test, register early. This will help because:

  • Waiting times for test dates and results can be long, especially in summer.
  • You’ll still have time to resit the test if needed.
  • You’ll know sooner whether you can enrol in your programme.
  • You can meet the deadlines: 31 August for submitting proof of language skills, or 31 May if you need a residence permit to study at ArtEZ.

If you are dyslexic or have low vision, you may be able to take a modified test. Ask the language centre where you plan to take the test as soon as possible.
