"Someone asked me whether a shadow means the absence of light. I think a shadow is the presence of the sun."
"Paintings of shadows, rhythmic line drawings and a canvas featuring a layered image of a shifting shadow. With 'still light', I present a collection of attempts to capture the beauty and movement of shadows. Shadows reveal an imprint of fragments of the world, whilst simultaneously distorting reality. Because they flatten the three-dimensional. And this gives rise to very beautiful and interesting images, which are partly recognisable and partly non-figurative. I see my work as a poetic capture of the moment. More an interpretation than an objective record.
Someone asked me whether a shadow means the absence of light. I think a shadow is the presence of the sun. For me, capturing shadows is not about capturing the dark, but rather the light. I leave the place of the light empty. And by filling the place of the shadow, I capture the light.
Appreciation, wonder and beauty are the key words of my art. For me, these come together in standing still. I try to capture the moment when standing still is necessary. Quiet moments of everyday life that you walk right past because you always have something better to do. For what does a shadow mean to someone who doesn’t look at it? But if you do look at it, you see layers, stories, change. How the shadow is never the same, and consists of multiple kinds of light and the partial absence of light.
My art is an invitation to pause and reflect on the beauty around you. In this way, you will begin to see and appreciate the world in a different light."
